Burgh Island, un gioiello spazzato dal vento al largo della costa del Devon, è in vendita per 15 milioni di sterline. Il rifugio costiero di 21 acri comprende un pub, una casa sulla spiaggia e il suo fiore all’occhiello: lo spettacolare Burgh Island Hotel e le sue 25 camere da letto. L’hotel, un sogno art déco arroccato in riva al mare, è considerato uno dei migliori esempi di architettura art déco ancora in funzione in Europa.
Nel corso degli anni, sono state numerose le persone importanti a frequentare questo paesaggio aspro. A quanto pare, avrebbero soggiornato presso l’hotel Nancy Cunard, Noël Coward, Joséphine Baker e il duca e la duchessa di Windsor.
Nessun ospite, tuttavia, ha lasciato un’eredità maggiore di quella di Agatha Christie, che si ispirò a Burgh per i romanzi Dieci piccoli indiani e Corpi al sole.
La scrittrice, infatti, fece costruire sull’isola un ritiro per scrittori che resta intatto ancora oggi, e che sarà un’attrazione per ogni autore in erba che speri di trovare nella vista verso la terraferma uno stimolo alla propria creatività.
Sull’isola si trovano anche la Mermaid Pool (una piscina di acqua salata), un campo da tennis, una spa e una piattaforma per l’atterraggio di un elicottero, ideale quando il Sea Tractor (il veicolo che durante la bassa marea permette di raggiungere l’isola da Bigbury-on-Sea) non è operativo.
Insomma se vi avanza qualche milione di euro e siete appassionati di atmosfere old english e di gialli, questa è l'isola che fa per voi! :-)) Una vacanza ce la farei, ma prediligo altre temperature, perciò credo proprio che non la comprerò ahahaha!

Burgh Island, a windswept gem off the Devon coast, is up for sale for £15 million. The 21-acre coastal retreat includes a pub, a beach house and its crowning glory: the spectacular Burgh Island Hotel and its 25 bedrooms. The hotel, an art deco dream perched by the sea, is considered one of the finest examples of art deco architecture still in operation in Europe.
Over the years, many important people have frequented this rugged landscape. Nancy Cunard, Noël Coward, Joséphine Baker and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor are said to have stayed at the hotel.
No guest, however, has left a greater legacy than Agatha Christie, who was inspired by Burgh for the novels Ten Little Indians and Bodies in the Sun.
The writer, in fact, had a writers' retreat built on the island that remains intact to this day, and which will be an attraction for any budding author who hopes to find in the view to the mainland a stimulus to their creativity.
On the island you will also find the Mermaid Pool (a saltwater pool), a tennis court, a spa and a helicopter landing pad, ideal when the Sea Tractor (the vehicle that makes it possible to reach the island from Bigbury-on-Sea at low tide) is not operational.
In short, if you have a few million euros to spare and are a fan of old English atmospheres and detective stories, this is the island for you! :-)) I'd take a holiday there, but I prefer other temperatures, so I guess I won't be buying it haha!
