The Royal Palace of Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital, still serves as the king's residence. For this reason, only parts of the entire complex are open to the public. It was built once in the 1860s and has since been inhabited by kings. The only period when no king lived here was in the 1970s under the regime of Khmer Rouge.
The main entrance goes straight into one of the city's main streets and is also the gate that the king uses when he goes to and from the palace.
The complex is lovely. The palace and the Silver Pagoda offers insight in the history of Cambodia . You can walk around among beautiful buildings at a leisurely pace and admire the many ornate buildings. The many murals will give you a good insight of the country’s past.
One of the impressive temples is the Silver Pagoda, also known as The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, because it houses this Buddha. In a way it can be compared to the Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok. The floor is made of silver – actually more than 5000 tiles (5 tonnes), but most of it is covered for protection. The pagoda is also home to a large Buddha with 2000 diamonds, ancient art and Italian marble.
A visit to the Royal Palace is recommended. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions, but it is also a peaceful retreat from the surrounding busy streets.
