When I visit my family in Mauritius, I don't just go to the beaches. I have come to the island for many years, so after the first few years where the beach was the place I enjoyed the most, I did start to explore sides of the island. Usually I make plans to go to different places or decide to take the camera and just wander off to see if can get som good shots. Usually it is landscape or street photography in the capital of Port Louis. Then one time I aksed my sister in law, Monique. I asked her for permition if I could come to her dance studio when she had a lesson.
All the photos were taken at Monique's house. Both her and her husband used to be profesional ballet dancers when they were younger and were both very much involved in performing art in general, in Mauritius. Even when they didn't dance profesional, they kept working as instructors for youth. What they did, was to make a studio at their house. On top of the roof, with it's own entrance they had a studio built which is open and airy with the palmtrees swaing outside.
She was gives private lessons every saturday. One of these saturdays I went over to her house. I had never done this kind og photography before. Portraits, or using models are not my strong side. It's something I don't do often and this was the first time.
For an hour I was either standing, sitting on the flor or even lying flat on the flor to try to get different angels. I didn't want to disturb so I had to try to stay in the background. After the practice we had a look at the photos and I promissed to pick the best and give to Monique. The girls didn't mind and eager to see the photos after the session.
Playing with processing, just to see how that would come out. A few weeks later I did the same thing again at Grand Baie Spa & Gym. They also had ballet classes, but for younger girls. A great experience for me to this kind of photography.
