Landscape photography - The southernmost island in Norway (14 photos)

Right now I am on vacation. But instead of walking along the rim of vulcanic craters on the Azores islands, I did a hike around the island of Skjernøya here in Norway instead. My plan was to travel to Portugual and the Azores for three weeks in september. Since everything was cancelled my friend and I desided to make the best of the situation. One of the first things we did, was to go to an island for landscape photography. All the photos are from that day.

This cave gave shelter to a small group of people during the Stone Age, 6000 years ago. At that time the sea level was much higher than the present, which meant the cave was much closer to the water then.

Restored boathouse

This place gave shelter to fishermen and their boats for several thousand of years. The restored boathouse on the photo was built around 1880. The fishermen kept their equipment here. The small, natural habour was still in use until World War II. Ryvingen lighthouse is located on a small island south of Skjernøya. You can see it in the background on the photo above. The last lighthouse keeper left the place in 2002, but the lighthouse is still in use, mainly as accommodation for tourists.

Skjernøya is the southernmost island which is inhabitat and it's now connected to the mainland by a bridge. Before the bridge was built in 1964 there were only 180 inhabitants. Today the island has around 390 inhabitants. In the past, most people were occupied with fishing and farming, but today it is mainly seafarers, industrial workers and oil workers who live here.

Even we were just an hours drive from home, we had a great day on a beautiful island.
