The harbor front in Kristiansand has some exciting architecture. Last week I walked along the harbor on my way to an outdoor area for a walk. I chose to make a stop at this beautiful building. Since Kilden is lacated by the harbor, it’s only a few minutes walk from «Fiskebrygga» which is a busy restaurant area. A popular plance, especially during the summer season when most people like to sit outdoor and by the sea. This time of year there were only a few people here.

Since 2012 when it opened, it has housed hundreds of performances of concerts, ballet, theatre, operas etc. The name of this building is Kilden. It was designed by a collaboration between Finish ALA Architects and SMS Architects from Kristiansand. It did take years to complete, as the process started in 2007. But then, it is quite big. The building covers an area of 16000 quadrat meter. Quite a big place. I have been here on several occasions, but haven’t seen all of the concert halls within the building.

The building is facing the sea and the harbor. The orange, wooden roof has the shape of waves, which I think has been a good choice since it is located by the harbor front. Large glass surfaces contribute to a lot of light. You can also see that the undulating roof continues inside the building. To me it seems as a great way of making the outside connect to the environment inside. Inside you will find both a restaurant, cloakrooms etc. on the first floor.

Kilden Performing Arts Centre is one of the country's largest houses for performing arts and music. This building has, since its opening day on 6 January 2012, entertained us with all kinds of theatre, opera, ballet and music experiences. Apart from The performer, there are also workshops, as well as an administration. Not only is the symphony orchestra based here, but also the regional theater and the regional opera. The small restaurant in one corner is a great start to a full evening at the theatre. This building is still one of my favorites, even though we've got quite a few more exiting architecure.
