Johannesburg is the largest city in South-Africa. Apart from being the country's economic centre, the area around the city is known for being the home of one of the African continent's most important archaeological sites. The city is often associated with Apartheid. At least until the country had its first democratic election in 1994. Both Nelson Mandela ( South Africa) and the Mahatma Gandhi (India) have lived in this city and both have had a great influence on the politics of their respective countries. Two men. From different countries, facing different challenges. Both were leaders who caused a deep impact on people and the world. These two men also acknowledged each other.

Constitution Hill is where you get an insight into the country's history, development of the legal system and the struggle for the first democratic elections. The whole place of Constitution Hill includes the Women's Jail, the Old Fort, the Constitutional Court and Number Four.

Once part of the place has been a prison for political prisoners. Both Mandela and Gandi have been imprisoned here. The exhibition makes us see the simimilarities between the two. As we walked through the whole place, it was possible to see the parallels and learn about their leadership. Gandhi was known for his non-violence philosophy, that did have an impact on Mandela and his values.

Deep dark hole

This photo shows where the most severe punishment was carried out. The prisoner was placed in one of the cells and kept in isolation. During one day, the prisoners sat here for 23 hours. The food they were served consisted mostly of rice water. There was an official limit on how long they could sit here, 30 days. But in reality it was often longer. To see the prison facilities did made a deep impression.

Mandela (1918 – 2013) was imprissoned on Roben Island from 1964 – 85. He became president of South-Africa from 1994 -1999 after he won the first democratic election. Two great men indeed.
