Through Ribeira....
Located on the riverbank of the Douro, Ribeira is one of the most important areas when getting to know Porto. Regardless of daytime or nighttime, this is a very busy area, one of most authentic and picturesque parts of the city in the heart of the old town. It is safe to say that a visit to this place will be perpetuated in the memory for a long time. In this first photo you can see a typical boat associated with the transport of the famous port wine, named "Rebelo", with D.LuÃs bridge in the background.
Of medieval origin, always has been an area of ​​great commerce and movement of people, due to the proximity of the river. It was an important entry and exit point for people and goods. The houses are simple and small, but with a common matrix that distinguishes them! And the city is also known for the typical architecture of this place. The urban environment is disorganized with irregular constructions that form a labyrinth with many dead ends...
It was in this area of ​​Ribeira and in its commercial connection with the Douro River that the city began its rapid development, defining the priority and strategy focused on the river. From here you could access the famous "Ponte das Barcas", where in 1809 more than 4,000 people died during an attack by French troops. The narrow and winding streets, overlooking Gaia, shady arches, typical houses with colorful facades from other times, its urban-riverside architecture, surrounded by cafes and shops make this one of the main tourist areas of the city.
Day and night entertainment, and a cosmopolitan vibe give "Cais da Ribeira" and the entire surrounding area a unique atmosphere of history, tradition, animation and beauty. It is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful areas to stay in Porto...and you can find there some nice hotels.
