The roots of the word "grisaille" are in French. Its literal translation means “gray”. This is a style of painting where tone rather than color comes to the fore. There are two main types of such tone painting:
-Black and white. Without the use of color, when the entire image is transmitted in black and white and gray tones.
-Colored. This option uses one color. Most often it is sepia or ocher.
