WOX Travel Contest | Week 12

Good day my dear friends, I am here today, to travel with you to another stunning location in our country. This time, we traveled to the Hambanthota Bird Park, on our way to the holy site of Katharagama. My husband, two sons, my daughter-in-law, and I all traveled by our car. That was our final visit with my younger son before he left for the UK. This bird park is located in Nagarawewa, roughly 16 kilometers from Hambantota Town. The entrance fee is Rs. 500.00 per person.

It is feathers resident with more than 35 acres of land. This location gave us the chance to interact and get to know about plenty of birds.

This place is Asia’s largest bird park and Research Centre and is home to endemic and exotic birds with over different species and about 3200 birds. Therefore, the park was divided into five separate areas: the wetlands, the wings of Asia, the flightless birds, and the macaw and cockatoo. The place was very beautiful with greenly trees and flowers.

Our first stop was a wetlands area where we saw a variety of caged bird species. In addition, we learned how important wetlands ecosystems are and how to protect them. The pictures we took were not particularly beautiful, as the birds were caged.

The area called Asian Wings gave us the chance to watch critically endangers and endemic birds in Sri Lanka and Asia. This location is superb for conducting research for college students and research fellows.

Following that, we went to a place where only flightless birds can live, where we saw many ratites, including ostriches, emus, and rheas.

Our next stop was the area with the macaws and cockatoos, which were domesticated and raised as pets without causing any serious harm to people. There were a lot of exotic macaws and cockatoos. It was lovely to see those colorful birds.

We arrived at the parrot paradise area at last. There was a huge collection of parrots from various countries. We spent a lot of time there because it captured our hearts.

The most thrilling and enjoyable part, of our journey, was the area where the birds were fed. They let us into the cage after we paid Rs. 1000.00 and gave us sunflower seeds. We had to pay Rs. 1000 per person. Others were unable to enter, but they were able to observe and take pictures from outside. However, the man who was in charge of the cages, took pictures for us using our camera. According to our choice, we can decide in which area we entered, Macaw’s side or other side. My daughter-in-law and I went to the small parrot area, while my two sons went to the macaw area. Using its beak, one macaw hurt my younger son's hand too. In any case, feeding the birds was the happiest part of our journey, so if you go there, don't forget to land there.
