This photo was taken from the fortress of St. John which is located on top of a hill north of Šibenik's old town, at 115 meters above sea level. The fortress was built at the beginning of the Candian War, in record time, through August and September 1646, the citizens of Šibenik, fearing the Turks who were preparing to conquer Dalmatian cities, participated in large numbers in the construction of the fortress and are credited with having it built in just two months.
Draft of St. John was made by the famous Franciscan engineer Antonio Leni from Genoa. This large and strong fortress has a star shape in the ground plan, and on the north side it is reinforced by a high masonry embankment in the shape of plier.
Fierce fighting took place around the fort in 1647. when the Turks under the leadership of Tekeli-pasha tried to conquer Šibenik.
The fortress defended Šibenik from 20,000 Turkish invaders in a one-month siege of the city from August 17 to September 16, 1647. 4000 Turks were killed in those battles.
