In Saarland, Germany's smallest federal state, mining has a long tradition. To this day, there are many tunnels and mines that can be visited, even though mining has long since ceased. In addition, the operation of smelting works lent itself to the region, as the transport routes were correspondingly short. These factories, some of them gigantic, are also mostly shut down. One of them, the "Völklingen Ironworks" ("Völklinger Hütte"), is now an industrial museum and a popular venue for various cultural events. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site...
