My Favorite City ~ Malacca The Historical City of Malaysia

Hello Steemians and all beautiful women of the community! I would like to introduce to you My Favorite City that is located 170km from home. To get there I have to cross 2 states Selangor and Negeri Sembilan before arriving in the Malacca State. Let's learn more about my favorite City Malacca City in Malacca State of Malaysia. There are many historical sites, beautiful architectures and my favorite food & beverage at this city that made me kept traveling here from home. Besides it only took me between 2 to 4 hours to reach this state, depending on the highways whether many cars or not. I did not prefer driving more than 5 hours for any road driving, it will make me sleepy and dangerous to drive when too tired and sleepy.

Malacca History

Malacca is dubbed as Malaysia’s unofficial historic capital, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. Boasting a good blend of historic attractions, Malacca is also home to great food. In the late 14th century, Malacca was a simple fishing village. Parameswara – a fleeing prince from the Sumatra Indonesia landed on Malacca’s shores, founded the city and turned it into a favored port using the strategic Straits of Malacca. In time, due to its strategic location between China and India, Malacca came to monopolize the trading routes in the region. In 1405 Malacca forged an alliance with the Ming Emperor in order to secure protection against Siamese invaders. Due to this historical event, Chinese settlers who married local Malays was dubbed as the Baba Nyonya people and their culture and lifestyle are a mixed of Malay and Chinese culture.

Malacca Overview

Malacca is a mix racial culture of Malay, Chinese, Indian, European and sundry influences. Malaysians loved Malacca’s laid-back atmosphere and lost-in-time feel. Shops close early here, traffic goes by at leisurely pace and city life is not as hectic as urban city like Kuala Lumpur.

Strolling the Malacca City in the famous Beca Ride

An enjoyable ride that felt like strolling around town together with the other Becas, colorful Becas' parade bringing the night to life in this part of town. Enjoy the slow and steady ride while listening to the rider narrating stories about the city and the culture. I guess then the feeling that you have tried this traditional ride at least once in your life is priceless. Beca can be found in the Jonker street in the evening time where you could see all these Becas that were decorated beautifully with colorful lights. They were so strikingly attractive and each comes with their own happy music that was coordinated to sync with their blinking colorful lights. Each ride now is tourist-driven, so they charge based on an hourly rate. The cost is RM40.00 per hour per beca ride that can seat 2 persons.

Famous Historical Sites

There are too many historical sites in Malaysia. I did not have much time so just managed to visit few historical places below.

Maritime Museum (Muzium Samudera)

The museum was opened to public in 1994, its main exhibits is the replica of an old ship Flor do Mar with 34 metres high, 36 metres long and 8 metres wide. The museum also houses exhibits, artifacts and documents from the golden era of Malacca. It also displays the trading link of Malacca from the early time through the colonial era until independence.

Measuring 110 metres in height, its revolving structure offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Malacca town and beyond. Located in the popular district of Bandar Hilir on Jalan Merdeka. The tower is named after the Taming Sari keris, a mythical weapon said to possess mystical powers belonging to the legendary Malay warrior, Hang Tuah. The structure’s design follows the shape of the said keris, with the peak of the tower resembling its hilt.

Famous Food

During my travel to Malacca City, I was quite shock to see people queuing to buy food and drinks. At least there will be 30 people at anytime to queue for these famous food.

Roti Canai Kayu Arang ~ A Paratha with that Charcoal Aroma

Roti Canai Kayu Arang is located by the AMJ Highway near Bachang Malacca and opens daily from 6.30am to 12.30pm. It has become a must stop for tourists visiting Malacca. It was established 20 years ago and still going strong until today. This famous Roti Canai place get its name from the way its Roti Canai was prepared using a traditional Kayu Arang (charcoal) burner. This way, the Roti Canai is crispier and more fragrant, beautifully fried and has a smooth texture, than those prepared on gas stove. The dhal curry accompanying the Roti Canai is also much delicious. To top it off, the price is reasonable and below normal price and you will get that crispy Roti Canai for only 80 sen per piece. There are various types of roti canai sold here, including roti tampal, roti telur and roti nanchos, with prices ranging between 80 sen and RM5. The photo below show Roti Canai on the Charcoal Burner

Keria Gula Melaka ~ A Sweet Potatoes Dessert coated with Gula Melaka

The queue time to buy this dessert will take around 1 hour each time to reach the end of the line, but the crazy thing is I never get tired of queuing to buy it whenever I am in this town. Although the weather temperature can reach 38 degrees here and can you imagine queuing for an hour and sweating under the hot sun. The funny thing is it has never made me stop buying this dessert. Keria Gula Melaka is a must try and has become a staple food for this town. It is actually made from Sweet Potatoes that is boiled and mashed. The dough then is rolled and cut into doughnut shapes. The final step is to coat it with a caramelized palm sugar and fry it until crispy. Such a craze for this dessert here which you will not see anywhere in Malaysia.

Nasi Lemak Hijau (Green Coconut Milk Rice)

The stall is located in a traditional Malay house at the outskirt of the town. The difference is the color and that's all I think is the difference and specialties for this rice compared to the normal Nasi Lemak across Malaysia. But this uniqueness has made it so famous and although it is located far from town, it still has a huge fan base that made this eatery one of the most famous eatery in Malacca.
