Together with Bangkok, Singapore is one of cities that is very convinient to have a stop over when we travel from Norway to Asia. I have therefore been here several times. Only for a few nights. Each time we choose to stay in a different district in order to spend most of our time exploring that district. Last time I was in Singapore, Chinatown was the chosen district. It turned out to be interesting. Even though many of the old shophouses have been replaced with modern buildings, you will still find some streets that aren't very modern.

The first place we chose to visit was the Chinatown Heritage Center. We thought it would be a great idea to get some background information about the chinese imigration to Singapore. The location wasn’t far from our hotel. The street where it's located, is called Pagoda street. There are lots of beautiful old shophouses too. The Heritage Center is located in some of these restored shophouses. It’s not only one building, but three put together. By entering the center we started to explore part of Singapores past and the story of the Chinese immigrants. The immigrants from China left their homes for varies reasons. Most of them left because of civil unrest and famine. What they hoped for, was to find the good life in Singapore.

The inside of the center covers six galleries, in addition to a range of experiences. A good idea is to use the multimedia guides that are available in English and French, in addition to Mandarin. The first immigrants from China were mostly traders and labourers. The excibition gives a very autentic picture of their humble living quarters. Many of these men lived too many together in one room. A lot of objects gives a detailed picture of their life and the culture they brought with them. There are also videofilms that shows the miserable living conditions.

After the visit we went over to Smith Street to eat dinner. At night the street is closed for traffic and becomes a «food street». Absolutely tasty. In my oppinion, Chinatown is still an attractive part of Singapore.
