In my opinion the Drakensberg Escarpment has some of South Africa's most spectacular landscape. The highveld plateau falls a 1000 m. to the eastern lowveld, creating dramatic landscape. One of the largest canyons in the world is found here -The Blyde River Canyon. A drive along the canyon will be one of those drives you won't forget. We stayed in a small town called Sabie. That gave us a good position to make the canyon a day trip. We did make many stops that offered great views, like "Gods Window". After several stops we came to this place called Bourke’s Luck Potholes.

These potholes are a geological phenomenon that was created sometime millions of years ago. It is due to primarily erosion and swirling currents. The water from the river carved these cylindrical holes. The river brought sand as well. When looking down into some of them, they seemed to have a beach on the bottom.

Even we stopped many places along the canyon, it was here at Bourke's Luck we spent most of our time. We started at the visitor center. A good place to start for information, as it explains the geology of the area. Then it was time to explore the potholes by walking along the many paths. Bridges have been built in several places. Not only do they connect one side to the other, but once on the bridge you get a good view. As we walked we noticed that the potholes vary in both shape and colour. This has to do with the soil.

Apart from the bridges, there are also viewing platforms. They provide a unique opportunity to study shapes, color and depth of the potholes. The pools offers an oportunity to cool off at the end of the tour. Or you can make a stop at the cafe on the way out. This place certainly prove tha water is powerful.
