Activity Title: Valentine’s Day Math
Self-Directed Learning Focus: Adding Doubles to 10; writing numbers 1-10; Recognising & Ordering Numbers 1-24; Addition sums to 20
Age Group: EYFS & Primary Year 1-2
Possible Risks: None
Resources: Mini Wooden Pegs with hearts, Card Stock, Laminator (if you have one)
Preparation: Download & print on A4 card the number bonds to 10 on hearts
Cut out the hearts & cut in half (laminate before cutting in half as you can use them again next year!)
We found our heart pegs at Flying Tiger Cophenhagen in Malta but @homeschooling @globalnomads you can also find them on Amazon, Chinese Shops if you’re travelling through Spain, Daiso or 20baht Shops in Thailand and many other craft shops in countries where they love to celebrate Valentines Day.
Self-Directed Learning Activity 1: Matching Doubles
I placed the two halves of the hearts in 2 separate piles and asked ‘Coconut’ to match the hearts with the same numbers. Then asked her to say the sum ie 4+4=8.
When she had matched all the ‘doubles’ we wrote the sums in our math workbook to practicing writing our number 0-10 and writing the + and = math symbols
Self-Directed Learning Activity 2: Recognising & Ordering Numbers 1-24
Next I emptied our heart pegs into a heart shaped container and after Coconut explored the pegs I asked her to put them in order from 1 to 24
Self-Directed Learning Activity 3: Addition sums 0 to 20
For our final activity I mixed up the hearts halves and split them into two groups. Coconut then had to take a heart from each group and add them together. We practiced putting the big number in our head and the small number on our fingers so we could ‘count on’ and once she had the answer she had to find the matching number peg and then peg the hearts together.
My little coconut loves Valentine’s Day so she found these activities really fun. I hope your learners have fun with our #selfdirectedlearning activity too!
