I saw this collaboration on youtube and I decided to take it on steemit style. Even without the Great American Farm tour the Rhodes family have influenced countless people to take control of their food. Personally, I got into homesteading before I knew who they were but that doesn’t mean I have been unaffected by their journey.
I discovered their channel a couple years into my homestead research journey. This was still before we were actively homesteading. I learned a little about chickens, composting and permaculture. They do things a little different than I might want to but there is a TON of valuable information in their channel. And we will be utilizing a lot of their principles.
Then they announced the Great American Farm tour and I was disappointed. I wanted to follow their journey, I wasn’t interested in what everyone else was doing. Why would I want to watch them travel the county in a bus? I wanted those garden videos dang it! Boy was I WRONG. I didn’t watch a single video until the very end of the tour and then I binge watched the whole thing. There was an insane amount of information in that tour. I just might have to buy the documentary they are working on because I can’t even remember it all. One huge take away for me was the John Suscovich chicken tractor. I have taken that idea and designed a coop for my laying ducks. My design might not work for everyone, our climate allows us to do different things but it would not have been possible without being exposed to John Suscovich which wouldn’t have been possible without the Rhodes family!
(We are putting in edible landscaping instead of flowerbeds or bushes)
That tractor system is just the tip of the information iceburg. I learned about things I never would have thought about, like Ox fiber. Super cool stuff! Our experiment with planting a pineapple top came from this video series! And don’t get me started on the joy of the Elliot Homestead. The way they approach food and cooking has forever changed my goals in life. I’m telling you, you will not regret watching these videos or buying the documentary if you decide to go that route.
(Raising rabbits on grass and mowing the lawn!)
The farming and homesteading contributions of this family pale in comparison to their family life. I know we only see a small portion of their life together but they inspire me. The way they include their children in everything they do, the immense patience they have with them. This is how I hope to parent and something I know I need to work on. You see so much of this in the farm tour. They fearlessly take their children on some crazy adventures. Not just checking out farms but educating them on historic places along the way. I’m sure their kids have been forever changed bu this unique experience.
(Our practice in patient, loving care)
If you haven’t had the opportunity to check out their youtube channel please do. The farm tour is amazing and they are currently starting over with their homestead. Not completely from scratch obviously but still very informative. I know my life will never be the same because of the Rhodes family!
