Homesteadphotography: Who's In My Sunflowers?

@knowledge-seeker's newest homesteading photography contest is about the homestead wildlife. I have never entered the contest before and I remembered snapping this picture last summer one afternoon as I was checking my herb garden.

I had never seen such a large grasshopper in my life. He, or she, measured about four inches in length. It was on my dwarf sunflowers enjoying the summer sunshine.

Interesting Facts About Grasshoppers


  • They have six legs, two pairs of wings and two antennae
  • There are over 11,000 different varieties/species across the globe
  • They use the long antennae to make sense of their surroundings.
  • They have six jointed legs
  • They are herbivores; which means they eat plant matter
  • The female lays an egg pod which can have a couple of dozen grasshopper eggs
  • Baby grasshoppers are known as nymphs
