Magpies and the Persimmon Tree
Hello, everyone.
Today is the beginning of the Chuseok holiday in Korea.
Chuseok is the most important holiday to Koreans, along with New Year's Day, as it is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Before finishing the autumn harvest, we visit ancestral graves with rice cakes and fruits, and family members visit their ancestral graves and perform ancestral worship ceremonies. Because of this, every year, 75 percent of the people around the country visit their hometowns, and the country's highways are congested and tickets are sold out, which is often referred to as "exodus."
In this post, I drew a picture of what I think of when I think of Chuseok: magpies and persimmon trees. The magpie has been regarded as a harbinger of Korea. When a magpie caws in front of a house in the morning, it is viewed as a pleasant visitor. This is because the magpie cries when an infrequet guest comes around. For this reason, farmers sometimes leave out unripened fruits, even if they harvest fruits such as persimmons. I hope this festive holiday will be welcomed by many people.

오늘은 한국의 대명절인 추석연휴가 시작되는 날입니다.
추석은 음력 8월 15일에 치르는 명절로서 설날과 더불어 한국인에게 전통적으로 가장 중요한 명절입니다. 가을 추수를 끝내기전에 덜익은 쌀로 만드는 송편과 햇과일로 조상들께 감사의 마음으로 차례를 지내며, 일가친척이 고향에 모여 함께 차례를 지내고 성묘를 하는 전통이 있지요. 이 때문에 해마다 추석이 오면 전국민의 75%가 고향을 방문하여 전국의 고속도로가 정체되고 열차표가 매진되는 현상이 벌어지는데, 이를 흔히 '민족대이동'이라고 부릅니다. (이 설명은 다른 문화권을 가진 분들에게 우리나라의 명절 추석을 알리기 위해 넣은 설명입니다.)
이번 포스트에서는 제가 생각하는 추석 시즌의 자연 이미지를 그려보았는데요.
바로 까치와 감나무입니다. 까치는 한국에서 예로부터 길조로 여겨져 왔습니다. 아침에 집앞에서 까치가 울면 반가운 손님이 온다하여 길조로 여기기도 하는데, 이는 까치가 낯선 자를 보고 울음소리를 내기 때문이라고 하네요. 이러한 이유에서인지 옛날부터 농민들은 감 같은 과일을 수확할 때에도 '까치밥'이라 하여 잘 익은 홍시 같은 여분의 과일을 그대로 남겨두기도 한다고 합니다. 이번 명절에는 많은 분들로 부터 반가운 소식이 들렸으면 좋겠네요^^
