My entry for @killerwhale's Karaoke Contest, week 14: Dag Vreemde Man by Ann Christy

So I decided to enter again this week, I'm really enjoying myself. I decided to share a Belgian song by a female singer, in Dutch (my native language). I'll add a translation below, for those who are curious to see what the song is about.

Ann Christy died when I was very young. Her music, however, lives on in the Flemish collective memory. She has become a huge part of our musical heritage, and I'm thrilled to be sharing her timeless music with you.

The song itself, was a challenge though. I'm still not sure I quite nailed it, but I really did give it the best I had. I hope you like it.

Here goes... (this is scary!)

Translation of the lyrics: I tried to translate this, so you could all understand, but it's hard to stay true to the original while maintaining the rythm and rhyme of the song. So I just tried to convey the meaning. That's hard enough as it is. ;-)

Your book, your newspaper, your smokes
Your warm slippers beside our bed
And your "fun" on the side
The pain when you avoided me

Your harsh words at breakfast
The feigned kindness
With which you say goodbye
It's all just so strange to me

Hello strange man, man of my dreams
You come and go
Bye strange man, the time will come
When I say "Stop, it's too late"
("Dag" can mean both hello and goodbye. This makes it hard to translate, but it has always felt like this to me. Hello at first, goodbye in the second line.)

You're sarcastic, and selfish
An almost impossible man
I'm no longer your one and only
You're surrounded by others

You're celebrated and popular
You travel, as far away as you can
When will you come back home?
You'll be a stranger in our home.

Hello strange man, man of my dreams
You come and go
Bye strange man, the time will come
When I say "Stop, it's too late"

Hello strange man, man of my life
Oh, who are you, where will you go
Bye strange man, nothing remains
For you, for me, you'll be alone

Where did you go?
I love you...

So, I messed up the rythm of the words, but at least you'll know what it was about. ;-) Thank you all again for listening, and thank you to @rhondak and @topkpop for the ongoing support and encouragement. If you think my entry was worth it, you can vote for it in the comment thread of the original contest post.

Thank you so much!

Hugs
