새해도 됐고 하니 책을 읽어볼까? 새해도 됐고 하니 영어 공부 좀 해볼까? 이런 생각을 하는 분들께 좋은 웹사이트를 하나 알려드리려고 한다. 바로 구텐베르크 프로젝트다.
What is your New Year's Resolution? I have no idea what they might be, but if I had to guess my safe bet would be "read more books". If you happen to have the same resolution, here is a very good website I'd like to recommend for free e-books: Project Gutenberg.
인쇄술을 발명한 '요하네스 구텐베르크'의 이름을 따서 "구텐베르크 프로젝트"라고 명명된 이 프로그램은 저작권이 만료된 오래된 책들을 모두 전자화해서 만인에게 공개하고자 기획됐다. 일명 온라인 도서관이라고나 할까.
This project named after Johannes Gutenberg, who was known to first use movable type in Europe, enabling Printing Revolution. Project Gutenberg wants to bring another Revolution in which everyone can access and read books. So they have digitized many books whose copyrights are expired, and release the e-books freely via website to people.
웹사이트 주소가 .com이 아니라 .org인 것에서 눈치채셨겠지만 상업 사이트는 아니다. 전 세계에서 많은 사람들이 자원해서 저작권이 만료된 책들을 전자화하고, 오류를 잡아내어 제공해주고 있다. 현재 5만 6천 권 이상의 전자책을 제공하고 있는데, EPUB 파일, 킨들 전자책 등의 형태로 다운로드할 수도 있고, 컴퓨터에서 바로 읽을 수도 있다. 전자책보다 수가 많지는 않지만 오디오북도 제공하고 있다.
This project is possible because of many volunteers who have digitized, proofread, and recorded audio books. Currently Gutenberg.org offers more than 56,000 books. You can download them in EPUB file or kindle format, or you can read them on the computer.
어제 글에도 설명했지만 저자가 사망한 지 70년이면 저작권이 만료된다. 이전에는 50년이었다가 70년으로 늘어났다. 이곳에는 저작권이 만료된 책들이 올라와 있기 때문에 주로 예전 책들이 있다. 신간이 아니라 옛날 책들이라니, 흥미가 없다고? 다시 생각해보시라. 옛날 책들이라면 바로 "고전"이니까.
이곳에는 고전으로 통하는 영미 문학들이 넘쳐난다. 그럼 어떤 책들이 있는지, 어떻게 다운로드해서 읽을 수 있는지 같이 살펴보자.
Like I said in yesterday's posting, copyright is expired if it's been 70 years since the author passed away. So most of books in this web site are old books, which means classics. What kind of Classic English Literature do they have and how can you download them? Let's find out.
책 찾는 법 / How To Search Books
자신이 찾고자 하는 책 제목이나 저자의 이름을 안다면 그걸로 검색을 하면 된다.
If you know the titles or the author's names, you can easily search them.
왼쪽 상단에 "search for books"라고 되어 있는 곳에 검색할 내용을 적고 클릭한다.
Type the key words(title or author) in "search for books" at the upper left corner and click.
1: 검색 결과가 많을 때 정렬 방식을 바꿀 수 있다. Sort Alphabetically (알파벳 순으로 정렬), Sort by Release Date (출간 순으로 정렬)
2: 자신이 찾은 검색어 및 정렬 현황을 보여준다. 현재 Sorted by popularity (인기순으로 정렬) 되어 있다.
3: 전체 검색 결과수를 보여준다. 모두 9건이다.
4: 책 아이콘이나 책 표지 그림의 경우는 전자책이다. 각 제목 밑에 누적 다운로드 횟수도 보여준다.
5: 스피커 아이콘은 오디오북을 뜻한다.
1: You can change sorting order. Sort Alphabetically, sort by Release Date, etc.
2: It shows your current "key words" and sorting order. Now it's sorted by popularity.
3: Total number of search result.
4: Book icons or Book cover pictures mean it's e-books. You can see how many times it's been downloaded.
5: Speaker icon means it's an audio book.
다운로드 하기 / How To Download Ebooks
이 중 마음에 드는 아이콘을 하나 클릭해서 들어가 보자. 난 다운로드 횟수가 가장 많은 (즉, 가장 인기가 많은) 첫 번째 검색 결과를 클릭했다.
Let's click the first one - the most popular one.
1: 자신이 검색한 책 제목과 저자를 보여준다.
2: 다운로드할 수 있는 화면.
3: 이 탭을 누르면 전자책에 대한 정보를 알려준다. 저자, 언어, 무료 전자책 출시 날짜, 다운로드 횟수, 저작권 현황(당연히 저작권 무료임) 등등
4: 다운로드할 수 있는 버튼. 보시다시피 온라인으로 html로 볼 건지, EPUB이나 킨들로 볼 건지, 이미지를 포함할 것인지 등을 선택할 수 있다.
5: 드롭박스에 다운로드하기. 드롭박스의 gutenberg 폴더로 다운로드 된다. 그곳에서 다른 곳으로 나중에 옮길 수 있다.
6: 구글 드라이브로 보내기. 구글 드라이브에 다운로드해놨다가 후에 자신이 원하는 다른 기기로 옮길 수 있다.
7: 원 드라이브 (One Drive)로 보내기. 원 드라이브에 다운로드해놨다가 후에 자신이 원하는 다른 기기로 옮길 수 있다.

3: This tap lets you know information about the e-book: author, language, release date, etc.
4: You can download by clicking these. As you can see, you have a few choices: read online, EPUB (with or without images), and Kindle (with or without images).
5: Send to Dropbox. If you click here, you can download the e-book file to the gutenberg folder in Dropbox. You can redownload it to your other devices once internet is connected.
6: Send to Google Drive. If you click here, you can download the e-book file to your Google Drive. You can redownload it to your other devices once internet is connected.

전자책 리더기에서 Gutenberg.org에 접속했다면 왼쪽에 있는 버튼들을 눌러서 바로 다운로드하고 전자책을 읽을 수 있다. 만일 지금 전자책 리더기에서 접속한 게 아니라면 컴퓨터에 다운로드하거나, 5, 6, 7번을 이용해서 다운로드해놨다가 나중에 전자책 리더기로 옮기면 된다. 전자책 리더기가 없더라도 무료 앱을 이용해서 핸드폰에서 책을 읽을 수 있다.
If you access Gutenberg.org via your e-book reader, then you can use number "4" buttons to download e-book files and read them. If you're using computer right now, you can download e-book files to your computer or to Dropbox/Google Drive/One Drive and later redownload to your other devices(e-book readers). If you have free e-book reader apps, you can read them with your smartphone.
오디오북 다운로드해서 듣기 / Download Audio books
위에 나온 두 번째 그림에서('시크릿 가든'의 검색 결과가 9개 나온 화면) 스피커 아이콘을 누르면 오디오북을 다운로드할 수 있는 페이지가 나온다. 전문 성우는 아니고, 자원봉사자들이 녹음해 놓은 파일이다. 이용자들에 의하면 리딩이 만족할만한 수준이라고 한다. 책을 읽고 난 후 오디오북을 들으면 리스닝 실력을 향상시킬 수 있다. 전자책을 읽어봤다면 오디오북에도 한번 도전해 보자.

무료로 볼 수 있는 전자책에는 어떤 것들이 있을까? "비밀의 정원(Secret Garden)"이라는 동화책 말고 어떤 것들이 있는지 대략 살펴보자.

저자 이름이나 제목, 책이 쓰인 언어 등으로 전자책을 찾아볼 수 있다. 맨 왼쪽에 보면 Top 100이라고 쓰여 있는데, 이 웹사이트에서 가장 인기가 많은 전자책 100위의 순위를 보여주고 있다. 어떤 책들이 있을까?
You can browse by authors, titles, languages, etc. If you want to check out what books are popular, click "Top 100" at the left column.
어제, 일주일, 지난 30일을 기점으로 "가장 인기가 많은 책 100권, 인기가 많은 저자 100명 등의 리스트를 볼 수 있다. 일단 어제 가장 인기가 많았던 100권의 책들 중 여러분이 관심 있어 할만한 것들을 몇 권 적어보겠다.
