Uniqueness: The power behind being yourself

There are so many trends out there today. Hairstyles and clothes are not the only trends. Actions and behaviors trend as well. What many people fail to realize, is the power in simply being yourself.

People follow celebrities and want to look like them, and act like them – basically, they aspire to be them. They chase after riches, fame, and approval. And they believe that the only way to be happy with themselves, is by being like everyone else.

This mindset is instilled in most of us in our high school years. We are taught by fellow students what is “cool” and what is not. It is a time where being yourself gets you taunted. It is only “cool” to be exactly like everyone else. A few brave souls stay true to themselves, and usually are shunned for it. But, high school isn’t forever, and in the real world, uniqueness is valued over similarity.

More people need to learn to be themselves and embrace their differences, not hide them.

Growing up, I wasn’t into sports like most kids my age. I enjoyed art and creativity. Even though I wasn’t popular, I didn’t care. I stayed true to myself and my passions. Doing what I loved made me happy and to me, that is what counted. Because I was happy, and doing what I loved, people didn’t have the power to make me feel bad for being different. Questioning yourself gives others power over you, so don’t. Love yourself for who you are.

There is a calming beauty behind uniqueness. There is a relaxing joy because you know what you want in life, and you aren’t working hard to pretend to be something that you are not. You hold the power of choice. Only you can decide how you feel. Only you know you. Be happy and embrace your uniqueness. It is what makes the world interesting. It is what makes you stand out from the crowd. Be the bright beacon of color in the crowd of gray.
