Ran into my friend at dinner I played with and went to school with: Rob Pearson - 1st Round Pick of Toronto Maple Leafs out of our high school + Bonus Video of his Hockey Fights in the NHL. (:

Today I was out for a bite to eat just down the road in Whitby when this legendary guy walks in. One of the best players to come out of our Minor hockey system here.

And yes, I am average size for a guy and no, Rob was not standing on a stool, he really is that big. I am about 5'9". He was always bigger than everyone growing up LOL

Rob was drafted 12th overall by the Toronto Maple leafs in the 1989 draft, as were some of the other guys I played with and went to school with who were drafted 1-2 years later. We had a lot of talent in our town for sports and that is pretty common knowledge around Canada.

For those of you that are not hockey people, the Leafs are one of the most valuable franchises anywhere in professional sports, and certainly near the list of top all time franchises in the NHL, nobody debates this.

Rob liked to rub people out, even when I was on the ice with him and some of the other guys I was really lucky to play with, I found myself being a fan sometimes. LOL

Rob Pearson played in five leagues over the course of his career:

Ontario Hockey League
American Hockey League
National Hockey League
International Hockey League
Deutsche Eishockey League (Germany)

Below a few lines, are the 13 teams that Rob Pearson played for during his career right from when he was drafted out of high school to play for the Belleville Bulls and then came back in a trade to play for our legendary Oshawa Generals:

In the 1990 year with Rob and the famous Eric Lindros- the Oshawa Generals won the coveted Memorial Cup - the championship for the entire CHL league which always has a few USA teams in it as well.

Here is a short video clip of the winning goal vs. the Kitchener Rangers in the Hamilton Copps Coliseum Arena:

The Generals won the 2015 Memorial Cup too, I was a season ticket holder up til my accident, that year was also an unbelievable team with a magical year, honestly.

2 min. overview of the Generals here and the Finals:

Some of the guys I played with or against in some leagues are in this photo too, it was a magical year. I think there was 6 or 7 guys I knew on that team.

Rob's teams he played for in order - from the 2 Jr. teams to the end where he played in Germany after his NHL days:

Belleville Bulls
Oshawa Generals
Newmarket Saints
St. John's Maple Leafs
Toronto Maple Leafs
Washington Capitals
Portland Pirates
St. Louis Blues
Worcester IceCats
Cleveland Lumberjacks
Orlando Solar Bears
Long Beach Ice Dogs

Toronto had a whopping THREE 1st round picks that year:

This is the list of players selected in the 1989 NHL Entry draft. There were 252 prospects selected across 12 rounds. Also included is each player's career NHL totals. If a player has no totals listed, this means that he has not played in a regular season game in the NHL.

Like Father, Like Son: Rob's son Luke was just Drafted recently:

Rob and Luke in the last couple months after their record setting year:

Rob's son was with him and I had not seen him for a few years. Luke Pearson is a goalie in the Whitby system, and was just recently drafted to play in the top Jr. hockey league in the world where all of kids want to play - the CHL where Rob and many of my friends played.

He was drafted in the 9th round, to the Ottawa 67's. A legendary franchise that has been around many many decades.

Rob was recently named the Head Coach of the Whitby Fury - and this photo is from him standing in the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame - as he was representing the one legendary Oshawa Minor team where him and my friends barely lost a game that year!

WHITBY -- Rob Pearson was named the head coach of the Whitby Fury in advance of the 2017-18 Ontario Junior Hockey League season. March 21, 2017 - Metroland File Photo

— The season may be over for the Whitby Fury, but that’s not stopping the news from coming.

On the same day the Jr. A club announced a new coach, Rob Pearson, the Ontario Junior Hockey League club recognized Nik Coric as the most gentlemanly player on Tuesday, March 21.

Pearson, who just wrapped up a tremendous season with the Whitby Wildcats minor midget AAA team, takes over the head coach duties from Scott McCrory, the team president who guided the Fury to a franchise-record 38-11-1-4 regular-season record before a heartbreaking seven-game loss to the Wellington Dukes in the first round of the playoffs.

With 12 players not returning due to age limit and scholarship opportunities, the franchise is shifting more toward development for the 2017-18 season, it said in a press release.

Pearson led the Wildcats to an OMHA championship this season and had them ranked third heading into the OHL Cup showcase tournament, where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 2-1 loss to the Toronto Nationals.

An Oshawa native who finished his junior career with the Generals, where he scored an astonishing 57 goals and 109 points in just 47 games, Pearson was drafted 12th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs and played 269 career NHL games.

Now 46, he was an assistant coach for the UOIT Ridgebacks in their inaugural season and has spent the past 10 years coaching and mentoring in both the Clarington and Whitby minor hockey associations.

In addition to winning the ETA and MTHL championships, the Oshawa Kiwanis team also claimed the Oshawa Carlo’s Electric Classic tournament, the OMHA title, the OHA all-Ontario crown and the Central Regional Air Canada Cup before moving on to the nationals in Thunder Bay and finishing fourth.

The team also had a very successful eight-game overseas trip to Czechoslovakia in November 1987, winning all four games against club teams, tying two against a national team the same age and losing two to an older national team.

Four players on the team would go on to win a Memorial Cup in 1990 with the Oshawa Generals, and two would play in the National Hockey League. The team members are Alan Avery, Paul Bennett, Dave Bryant, Kevin Butt, Mark Buzminski, Dale Craigwell, Mike Dahle, Jean-Paul Davis, Dave Finch, Jeff Gosselin, Brian Grieve, Bill Lawrenson, John MacKinnon, Brian Mueggler, Rob Pearson, Chris Snell, Dave Somerville, Mike St. John and Brett Taylor.
