Walking, a Small Step to Changing your Life

One question I think we can all agree on is, how to go from doing nothing to doing something to improve our health, with little to no effort?

For many, this is a confusing and often scary concept to consider. The magazines, te-lie-vision and internet are full of fitness advertisments with photographs of people who are fitness competition ready, and if it's not that degree of fit, the models are already pretty thin and toned. This perception can be overwhelming to those just beginnning.

So the feeling of anxiety you get when you see these photographs, is perfectly acceptable as a response. You won't get to competition fit level without a complete overhaul to your life. For those of you who want to do it, go for it! Find a professional who has experience with fitness competition and change your life.

But for those of you who are not so ready to completely change all aspects of your daily life, let's begin by just taking a walk.

Morning Walk

Looking out the window to see the early morning sun creeping over the horizon, you decided to crack the window open a few inches. The crisp cool air comes through and it sends a slight chill through your body, but when you inhale the rich oxygen, you want to go out and enjoy more.

Finishing your coffee, so anyone you come across won't feel the wrath of your morningtime alter-ego. A slight anxiety surrounds you, and with a sleepiness you can't shake, and begin to make excuses why you should just stay at home instead.

Headphones in, and playlist set, you open the back door. The sun shines in your eyes, but it feels warm and comforting so you inhale and pause in the glow before stepping onto the porch.

The boards of the porch echoes a moan with each step in the quiet still morning air. Leaving the bottom step, you cross the crisp dewy grass to the manmade path laid out for you. Music vibrating through your ears, you begin your walk.

Along the way you take notice of the vibrant green grass with dewy drops shining like diamonds in the ever growing sunlight. There a birds chirping in a tree showing signs of seasons changed. A slight breeze leaves an icy kiss on your cheeks and in this moment your thoughts begin to come.

One after the other, reminders for appointments for the day, week and even month. Chores to accomplish, what to make for lunch and dinner. Reminders to remind the kids of what is needed from them for today. Stream after stream the thoughts flow, but you don't stress over them, you just let them gently roll through your minds eye.

After some time your heart beat quickens, you begin working up a sweat and feel a slight exhiliearation pushing you to walk briskly. A smile is on your face although you didn't conciously place it there. The morning growing lighter, you begin to pass by other early morning walkers. They are infected by your beautiful face and glowing smile, they smile back.

The thoughts that were currently racing, disappear and you can only hear the sounds of your favourite songs and smell the refreshing scents of fresh cut grass and chiminey smoke, signs of summer truly ended.

All at once you realize you can see your front door, saddness doesn't overcome you but a happiness and knowledge that today will be a good day. Revitalized and energized, you climb the front steps and open the front door. The anxiety and sluggishness when you steeped out the back door, just a mere twenty minutes ago, has disappeared and is replaced with hope and confidence.

This story reflects the mental and emotional change you go through with twenty minutes of physical exercise per day. It doesn't go into depth and talk about weight loss because with a change of mental being and a boost in energy, the weightloss will come.

Take a walk daily and see how you feel, all it takes is a short walk and you have taken a life-changing step every time you walk out the door.
