Most of my product spotlights to date have focused on non-essential beauty products (though I would argue that deodorant should be considered a necessity). I realize that if an individual is considering adopting a zero-waste lifestyle (or simply interested in reducing their impact) that these products can be skipped altogether! But there are certain items that are true necessities for health and hygiene. So this product spotlight features something a little different - a compostable bamboo toothbrush from Brush with Bamboo!

Brush with Bamboo is the world’s first plant-based toothbrush. Every component of the toothbrush is plant-based: bristles, handle, wrapper, AND box.

Brush with Bamboo is a USDA Certified Biobased Product by United States Government’s Biopreferred Program.

The toothbrush is BPA-Free, Vegan, Green American Certified, and Verified Non-toxic.

According to the website, there are five main features to note when referring to the Brush with Bamboo toothbrush:

1. Biodegradable Handle - made entirely of bamboo
2. Plant-based Bristles - composed of 62% Castor Bean Oil and 38% plastic (It’s not perfect, but it’s a step in the right direction).
3. Compostable Packaging - compostable wrapper made from plants with NO tape or glue used.
4. Toothbrush Lifespan - just as long as a conventional plastic toothbrush!
5. True Sustainability - Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth, reaching full size within just 2 years! The bamboo used is bamboo is totally organic and wild.

The Brush with Bamboo company was founded by the Kumar Family in Southern California.

In 2008, they (Kumar family) began the conversion of their small suburban home into an organic permaculture garden and model of sustainability that now produces 5000 pounds of food annually, harvests rainwater, and serves as a learning center for gardening. They named their house The Growing Home. Today, they also manage a small organic farm near their home that provides healthy organic food to many families through a CSA program. In partnership with long-time family friend, Rich Delano, Brush with Bamboo was founded as part of the family’s shift towards a sustainable zero-waste lifestyle.
