The Old Dog: And The Curse of The Squeaky Shoes!

“The bitterness of poor quality remains a lot longer than the elation of a cheap price.” I’m not sure who coined this phrase but a friend of mine lives by it and cites it often.

What does this have to do with “The Curse of The Squeeky Shoes”? Let’s find out!

For me Buying Shoes is a Torturous Experience!

I bought three pairs of new shoes for a great price. These days they rarely get out!

In my work and life I am regularly in need of more formal attire as I make my way around quiet places of study and learning. I tend to stick with one pair of trusty dress-shoes that I carefully select and use until I’m “forced” to buy new ones. The prompting usually comes from @lellabird60!

"You need new shoes" she said! "You're always wearing the same ones" she complained. "Come on let's go to Italy, I know a place" she continued. "Blah blah blah blah......." she carried on. With good intentions of course!

You get the picture. So off we go to Italy to this Shoe Store that has hundreds of pairs of men's dress shoes.

I usually hate going shopping. One of the reasons is that I’m a big man with BIG feet (read Sasquatch, Bozo The Clown, or Ronald McDonald big). Not only are my feet big they’re also wide and I pretty well need a large selection in order to find the right pair.

  You Bought How Many Pairs?

So we get to the store and I’m amazed! I actually found three pairs of shoes that not only looked decent but were also VERY comfortable and CHEAP! I walked out of the store quickly (an added bonus) with 3 pairs of dress shoes still in their boxes. Now I could change them up and not always look the same. Wow “I’m becoming quite the man about town” I thought. WRONG!

How Did The Shoes React In a Real Life Setting?

You can imagine. Squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak! So loud, so embarrassing and very annoying. All three pairs! No, it wasn’t just me being overly self- conscious. These were ear piercing squeaks! Before you start thinking that I’m putting down Italian shoes only the store was from Italy but the shoes were from elsewhere.

Don’t be Cheap When it Comes to Shoes!

So, I’ve learned my lesson. My friend was right. “The bitterness of poor quality remains a lot longer than the elation of a cheap price.” I went and bought a high quality “name brand” pair of shoes for the same price that I paid for the 3 pairs of cheap shoes. I’m happy to report that they are nice looking, very comfortable and QUIET!

These shoes cost me as much as three pairs of the cheap shoes but they're not only comfortable, they're silent!

My Top Four Reasons Not to Buy Cheap Shoes!

4.) Give your feet a break. They carry you around all day and they deserve the best!

3.) Good quality products last longer.

2.) They won’t embarrass you with their squeaking!

1.) The bitterness of poor quality remains a lot longer than the elation of a cheap price!

What do You Think?

  • Is it better to go for quality whenever possible?
  • Doing so, do you save money in the long run?
  • Have you had a similar experience?

I hope that you enjoyed my story about "The Curse of The Squeaky Shoes"!
