First than nothing we need to know what a prom is; a prom is an event where the people use to wear very beautiful dresses and any other kinds of fancy clothes, normally we find to types of proms, the junior prom, and the senior prom, events that take place at the end of the school periods.

The tradition is that kids go to the prom in couples. I am talking about a boy that will ask a girl to go to the prom with her, or the girl asks the boy. Well also in these days some same-sex couples attend proms (we are in 2017 and this topic with genders is really hard to handle). In addition, there are kids who go to the prom alone. However, it is traditionally a date night.

It depends on the school, the parents or even the students themselves if they set traditional rituals in the prom; depending on how traditional a prom is, there are a whole slew of rituals that we can find or the people can set. Asking a date (or agreeing to be a date), picking out a dress or tux, going to the date's house to pick her up (or being picked up), pinning a corsage, posing for pictures, riding in a limo (for those that can afford it, actually is something that not everybody can afford), crowning of prom kings and queens, etc.

Talking about the outfit that boys or girls can wear, normally the kids themselves make their choice or sometimes the parents help with it.

- Girls usually wear a gorgeous dress with beautiful heels or shoes, their outfit makes them feel like important and more than nothing prettier than everybody else.

- Boys use to have to choices, normally we can see them with an elegant suit wearing a tie and leather shoes or the tuxedo that is even more elegant than the suit normally it uses a bowtie that is totally different than a tie. For this kind of events, boys use to wear more a tuxedo than a suit normally because they feel more elegant wearing it.

Also, kids use the prom, this important event like the only way that they have to pass from the childhood to adulthood doing things like spiking the punch, sneaking outside to smoke pot, staying out late, having sex, etc.

Adults have a love-hate relationship with this rebelliousness, which you see parodied, romanticized, and derided in movies and TV shows.

At the end kids have the last word about what they are going to wear for a prom, obviously they are not going to wear any kind of stuff, but also if they have a date, she or he will take the lead to choose something that makes him or her look really handsome or beautiful for the couple that they chose. 

On the other hand, adults normally judge their kids before letting them go to the prom and some kids like to avoid this ritual because sometimes it turns really embarrassing for them.
