Barrio Adventures: Lady with the Hardware Store

One of the things I love most about Acapulco is the people that reside here. Sure, you’ve got your share of shitty people around just like in every major city but for the most part the people here are friendly and a bit more human in many ways.

The people here are also inspiring. I’ve written in the past about it both about specific people, like those I like to wave to on the hill on the way down into the city.

One of the people I look up to most in this city without even really knowing her is this woman on our hill that seems to own and run a Ferreteria, that is a hardware store, all by herself. While I’ve seen men helping her develop the property attached to it it seems like she’s single and proud of it.

She’s one of those woman whos gorgeous without spending the money on the clothes or the makeup. She’s got a pretty face and a nice body and seems no nonsense. She drives around a motor scooter that we occasionally see her with her daughter on, coming home from school. She’s got every man in the barrio with googly eyes but they’ve all visibly got a lot of respect for her as well.

When we pass her we wave and if she notices she always waves back. We’ve purchased a few things from her place in a pinch here and there and are friendly enough with her.

Today when we went to Walmart just before it rained I noticed her standing on her balcony looking out. This mental image of her inspired this post because she had such a proud expression on. She’s been building up the property next door both by herself and with the help of locals and it’s finally starting to shape up.

I’m not sure what her plans are for that building or really anything about her but what I do know is that she’s got a confidence about her that I envy and hope to one day have myself.
