Now that you are aware of the consequences of keeping an untidy room, here are the steps to keep your room tidy:

Step 1. Set up a timer for 5 mins:

Dedicate  a small period of your time to just clean your room. You are free to  adjust it to 10-15 mins. The quicker you can clean your room, the less  chances there are of you to get bored and give up.

Step 2. Pick up your clothes

Pick  up all the clothes that are lying around your room and throw the dirty  ones in a laundry bag / hamper. Now, if you are one of the millions of  lazy people, you may not have the patience to fold the clean clothes or  hang them on hangers. Then the solution for you is to either just stuff  them in your closet or to put them temporarily in a separate basket.  This way, you may have to fold you clothes or hang them only once in 4 days instead of doing it everyday.

Step 3. Make your Bed.

This  will take only 40-45 seconds. First, if there is anything on the bed,  throw them on the the floor. Next, arrange your pillows in a neat  manner. Spread your blanket / bedsheet over the bed, fold up the extra  part, and tug from one side to remove creases and folds.

Step 4. Organize your bedside table, dressing table and desk.

If  your bedside table has a drawer or a little cupboard, then put all the  unnecessary things lying on it inside. If not, then keep a small shoebox  next to it where you can keep that stuff.

For the dressing  table, arrange your perfume bottles, creams, and other cosmetics neatly  in a line. For women, make sure you have a jewelry box for all your  accessories. You can arrange your makeup on the table. But your room  will look better if not a lot is kept on the table.

Do the  same things with your desk as you did with the bedside table, put the  unnecessary things in the drawer. Arrange your books neatly by making a  neat pile or put them on a bookshelf. Hide all the wires of your laptop,  desktop, etc behind your desk or under the table. If anything is still  left on your desk that you cannot put in the drawer, arrange it neatly  on the desk itself. And lastly push your chair towards the table.

Step 5. Clean up the dishes.

If  you are kind of person who eats in your bedroom, you most probably have  a bunch of dirty bowls and plates and empty bottles lying around. Pick  up anything that belongs to the kitchen and put them in the sink. But if  you living in a dorm room and don't have a kitchen, throw the paper  plates and plastic spoons in the bin.

Step 6. Remove the random mess out of sight.

Now  collect the other things that may be lying around on the floor or  hanging off chairs, like your towel, magazines, empty boxes, remotes,  tissues, etc. Throw out anything of no use and put the rest away in  closets or drawers, out of sight.

Few tips to keep in mind :

  • Don't keep some things lying around just because you need it often. It hardly takes a few seconds to open a drawer or closet.
  • The more things you keep outside, the more cluttered your room will look.
  • Spray some air freshener, or light scented candles.
