The garden or garden carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) comes from the Mediterranean and has been cultivated since ancient times as an ornamental plant. Two other common species are the heather carnation (Dianthus deltoides), the bearded carnation (Dianthus barbatus) and the spring carnation (Dianthus plumarius). In total there are more than 27,000 registered carnation varieties. Most garden carnations bloom in late May or June throughout the summer.
