Rediscovering Music

I started listening to music again lately. What do you mean started? I love music. I do. I remember blasting music on my boombox with the best of them in my teenage years. At that time it was Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Tevin Campbell ❤️thump thump❤️, and even Snoop Dog if you can believe it. I would play the music on full blast and neighbors all the way down the street could hear it. Thankfully no one called the cops for noise nuisance…I’m not even sure there was such a thing back then?

I thought about writing a post on music when I came across @amariespeaks entry to @apolymask’s Information Finding Championship - Season 1 : Round 22. It was the perfect opportunity to participate and share my love of some of the musicians out there with others that are inspired by music.

Rules

I think music is one of the most important ingredients in this recipe we call life.

I preferably want original music you yourself created, BUT.. You can enter anything about the subject of music. Could be a poem, could be a drawing or a painting or a music video of a song you really like on YouTube. Or perhaps you could write up an essay on what music means to you?

Anyone that knows me would know I don’t have an ounce of artistic talent. I may get away with drawing stick figures, I sing tunelessly along with the music I love, and I definitely cannot create music. I came across a newbie to steemit, @kayannepepper, who shared the term auditory synaesthesia. In her words, it is where she can see colors when listening to music. How beautiful that must be!! Seriously. I imagine her world filled with the colors of the rainbow rhythmically dancing to the beat of the music. I really am looking forward to reading her future posts. Thank you @magicalmoonlight for bringing her to my attention!

At first, I thought this should be an easy post to write (I have been quite lazy to write lately). Well, it was a tad more challenging than I thought. I’ve spent years listening to novels on audiobooks and only the occasional songs I hear on the radio. I have no idea what songs I love, like, nowadays. So I started exploring music again. I listened to both new and old songs. I have discovered some new artists (new to me) and realized that many of the songs I love in my youth and from past years do not touch a part of me as they once did. They are all great songs but I’m not as affected by the soulful voice and beautiful words as I once had been. I think of myself as a romantic at heart and love songs especially are my go-to music. I started listening to some old favorites but realized those sappy feelings that I remembered from the past were no longer there.

Perhaps it is because the heart changes as we grow older and some loves we remember are simply that, memories of the past. Sometimes, old sparks shimmer away while new ones burn bright and starry. Quoting Fuel, cause I have found all that shimmers in this world is sure to fade away...again.

So here is my music list as of today! Some new and some old ones thrown in. It may change tomorrow or the next day, but I will enjoy these songs today.

Calum Scott – You Are the Reason

Calum is a newly discovered musician that I keep listening to again and again. You are the reason is a beautiful song with the perfect music video in my opinion. ♪ THERE GOES MY HEART BEATING ♪

If I could turn back the clock
I'd make sure the light defeated the dark
I'd spend every hour, of every day
Keeping you safe
And I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken

Ed Sheeran with Andrea Bocelli – Perfect Symphony

This powerhouse duo goes to show that perfection can span across all differences, whereby with race, color, and in this case, language. A beautiful symphony can occur at all levels and across all spectrum of this diverse universe.

Baby, I'm dancing in the dark with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favourite song
When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath
But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight

I also love the songs that have a bit more beat…tap, tap as I’m moving to the music.

OneRepublic - Good Life

OneRepublic is just an outright positive group. I love almost all their songs.

Sometimes there's airplanes I can't jump out
Sometimes there's bullshit that don't work now
We all got our stories but please tell me
What there is to complain about
When you're happy like a fool
Let it take you over
When everything is out
You gotta take it in
Oh, this has gotta be the good life

Dashboard Confessionals – Vindicated

Talk about going back back back! I had this song on almost every CD back in the days (yes before ipod and smartphones became mainstream, we had to listen to music on cassette tapes and CDs!).

Hope dangles on a string
Like slow-spinning redemption
Winding in and winding out
The shine of it has caught my eye
And roped me in
So mesmerizing so hypnotizing
I am captivated
I am
Vindicated

SOO…notice I favor male singers? Not sure why many of my favorite singers are male. There are some female artists that are also badazz.

Taylor Swift – Blank Space

I like my share of pop music! Or is it country? Taylor may have transitioned from the country to pop music genre when this song came out. I am sure many gals out there can relate to making the bad guys good for a weekend, just a matter if they want to admit it or not. ;)

Nice to meet you, where you been?
I could show you incredible things
Magic, madness, heaven sin
Saw you there and I thought
Oh my God, look at that face
You look like my next mistake
Love’s a game, want to play?

Little Big Town – Girl Crush

Get your mind out of R-rated matters! If you listen to her soulful voice, then you would know this song has nothing to do with girls. Well, maybe something. The lead singer reminds me of the melancholy rendering of I Can’t Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt, which used to be my favorite song as a teenager. Yes, odd song to be a favorite song for a teenager, but like I said, I am a romantic at heart. I don’t listen to Bonnie anymore because the song is simply too sad and I don’t find myself relating to the words anymore. Little Big Town is a more peppier version of Bonnie Raitt in my opinion.

I got a girl crush
Hate to admit it but
I got a heart rush
Ain't slowing down
I got it real bad
Want everything she has
That smile and that midnight laugh
She's giving you now

There you have it. Some of the songs I’m listening to right now. I am going to listen to everyone else’s picks that participated in this contest to see if I can add more music to my playlist!
