When we recorded this a few months ago, I had no idea Tom Petty would be an angel himself less than a year later. So because of that this video has a happier vibe than my “official” tribute for Steemit Open Mic, and also because I had just reunited and started playing music with my old friend Alex Matos. Alex and I met in South Korea at the 8th Army Band. He ended up living permanently in my hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, but we lost track for ten years or so. He was a trumpet player in the Army, and during the last year as part of an acoustic duo with me he played several other instruments and harmony vocals. This video is from the first time we rehearsed as a duo. It’s one of my “live in the studio” things where I use one microphone to record myself or a duo (no multitracking) and then polish it in the mix and master. A much different animal than the raw audio cell phone videos I do for Steemit #Openmic, but just as live.
Now I’ve just moved to Colorado, and watching this makes me homesick. And sad about Tom Petty. Well, this too shall pass, and life goes on. And life is looking pretty good here in this little mountain town, even if I can’t wear flip-flops nearly as much as I’d like.
