OST of the Day #3: Gunbound - Stage #1

Hey Steemians!

OSTs are really underrated but they're so good, so I thought I'd share a song a day and my thoughts about it in this series! I highly recommend listening while reading! 😊

My pick today is from the classic turn-based multiplayer game, Gunbound!

Here's the song for today:

Dat nostalgia tho, amirte

Gunbound was first released in 2003 by Softnyx and became an instant hit for PC players #PCMasterRace. If you've heard of Worms, Gunbound pretty much works the same way, where players choose a tank (from different categories with different stats) and shoot each other from random locations on a 2D map. Players also have to adjust their shots for power, elevation, wind and elements.

This game was one my favourites back in the day. I remember playing the Jewel mode a lot, where instead of shooting other players, you shot jewels with different point amounts and the team that managed to get at least 100 points first wins! I remember I was scared to battle other players at first so I played Jewel.

But then I realised most people didn't wanna play Jewel and I had a hard time finding opponents. So I had to play other modes but it wasn't so bad. Turns out I had quite a good instinct on how and where to aim my shots so I rose up the ranks pretty quickly. 😃

I love this song because it instantly triggers nostalgia since it's one of the most common themes you hear in the first battle after you login. I believe you can find this theme on the Adium Root stage the most, but the game does randomise among the track list and stage maps. Of course there are many other great songs from this game, but I chose this theme first because players will recognise it easily.

Adium Root stage map; this is also one of my favourite maps because of its easy terrain and nice colour scheme.

The song itself is very cheerful and happy-sounding, and is very in-tune with how the map and characters look (hehe see what I did there). All the different stage maps are quite colourful, and the characters have anime-like features, giving them a "cutesy" look, which matches really well with this song in particular with the high notes from the electric piano. Even though the melody comes out really strong I also enjoy the softer harmony in the background from the lower keys, and the subtle support from the bass and cymbals.

If you're feeling nostalgic like me and really wish you could play this game again, I recommend this private server called Gunbound Thor's Hammer! The server is still active, but there're not many users, so I suggest grabbing a friend to play along and reminisce with you! After all, it's always more fun when you're playing with friends. 😊

Thank for reading!
