Abongphen Highland Forest as part of Bamenda Highlands which belongs to 35 biodiversity hotspots is at most threatened by bushfires as other tropical forest around the equatorial. Whole Bamenda Highlands has been covered with the misty mountain forest which is the most important source of water and home for hundreds of endemic species which we can not find elsewhere some thousands years ago. Even in 1960 the forest has covered almost half of the mountain range. At the moment it is not even 2 percent. Bushfires are the cause of the vast majority of deforestation.
There are actually three main reasons why many people use this destructive approach. But there is one bigger behind all of them. It is their tradition. Bushfires were (are) affiliated to most of food generating processes. Obviously not only in tropical region. Fires are starting to be a problem when the population grows and so does the demand for agricultural land and other source of food.
1 - Extensive cattle breeding
Currently the biggest issue is burning pastures in dry seasons for fresh grass to grow back faster and to kill ticks. Fires are never under control so they always reach even the forest and destroy the edge of it. Every year are few meters bitten and pastures are getting bigger and bigger.
2 - Hunting
Some hunters are using strategy chasing wildlife with bushfires. Unfortunatelly they also never care how much of the environment will be burnt.
3 - Slush and burn farming
As the availability of land is decreasing more pressure on the original forest is raising. Soil in tropical region is relatively infertile. Due to rapid decomposing processes most of the nutrients are hidden in the canopy which, after deforestation and burning, will fly into the atmosphere. That is one of the cause of climate change.
It seems the most effective way how to fight the raising of temperature is forest conservation and its RESTORATION!
But how to stop bushfires? The keys are raising education and awareness (40%), improvement of living standards of locals (40%) and law enforcement (20%).
Let´s join our forces to save the Abongphen Highland Forest. We hope and believe it can not be easier than with STEEMIT!
