Peak Of Furnace is a shield volcano on the eastern side of Réunion island which is actually just near of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean!
Currently it is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, along with Kīlauea in the Hawaiian Islands (Pacific Ocean), Stromboli, Etna (Italy) and Mount Erebus in Antarctica.
The volcano is located within Réunion National Park, a World Heritage site.
Named Piton de la Fournaise in French, it is a major tourist attraction on Réunion island.
Fluid basaltic lava is flown out with fire fountaining at the vent during eruptions. This volcano has more than 150 recorded eruptions since the 17th century. Amazing indeed!
The eruptions of Peak Of Furnace is within the caldera, hence do not cause much devastation, because the caldera is uninhabited!
This lava eventually on many occasion reaches the sea with spectacular results! It is worth noting that for months after an eruption, the core of the lava flows can still be hot enough to steam in rainy weather. Just imagine that temperature!
Here is when lava meets the sea! Simply spectacular!
