Amazon stated on Thursday that their search is on for a second headquarters in North America.
--
It's a massive new development that will cost as much as $5 billion to build / run, and will come with roughly 50,000 jobs.
The news will likely start several cities jockeying for the site and business, and is the latest step in the very quick expansion for the online retail behemoth who just recently completed its largest acquisition of high-end grocery chain Whole Foods.
Expansion has added tens of thousands of new staff.
The Seattle based company, listed a series of requirements for the new location, including
--
-- a metropolitan area that has a population greater than one million,
-- “a stable and business-friendly environment,”
-- and a location that was able to attract and retain workers.
The company is calling the development HQ2.
“We expect HQ2 to be a full equal to our Seattle headquarters,” Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s chief executive,
said in a statement.
“Amazon HQ2 will bring billions of dollars in upfront and ongoing investments, and tens of thousands of high-paying jobs. We’re excited to find a second home.”

Amazon stated it was inviting proposals for the new site, and said it said could have a similar layout to its Seattle HQ, which includes a downtown or urban campus.
The retail giant insisted the new HQ would be a “complete headquarters for Amazon — not a satellite office,” and that company execs will be able to make the choice to base their teams in both Seattle and the new location, or either.
Oct. 19th is the date that bids for the new offices are due by, and the company said it will announce its choice next year, most likely.
This news is just the latest step in Amazon’s stunning growth and transformation, starting from the online bookseller it was into the corporate giant that now gives next-day delivery to customers from their millions of products, a pile of hardware from phones and computers / tablets to home / office assistants and online services, and an ever growing dive into the grocery markets.

The company has been growing quickly recently. Amazon now has in excess of 382,000 employees worldwide.
In January, they promised to create 100,000 jobs in the United States over the next 18 months. They increased the domestic work force to more than 180,000 staff by year end -2016, up from 30,000 in 2011.
These figures do not include the thousands of temporary workers who join Amazon for high-demand timeframes like Christmas.
They employed 300,000 staff globally by their 20th year as a public company, the quickest any U.S. company has reached that mark, according to the Progressive Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank.
Still, the massive increase in the staffing and jobs, hasn't shielded Amazon from criticism, including President Trump, who state that the company is decimating retail jobs by pushing shoppers online and away from bricks and mortar locations and stores.
