Charles Bridge anniversary: construction of the iconic Prague landmark began 661 years ago!

Hi everyone!

Just two days ago, on July 9, the Charles Bridge, one of the most popular tourist attractions of Prague as well as the whole Czech Republic, was celebrating an important anniversary. On July 9, 1357 - that is exactly 661 years ago - the construction of this architectural jewel began.

Allegedly, it was the king Charles IV himself who laid the foundation stone of what is now one of the most famous bridges in the world. Charles IV was known to be a huge fan of astrology and he often planned his decisions according to what his court astrologists advised him.

Therefore, it is believed that construction of the bridge actually began at exactly 5:31 A.M. as this is when a favorable constellation of the Saturn and the Sun conjunction occurred. We might never know the details of what happened on that day and whether the construction really commenced at 5:31 but what we do know for sure is that the Charles Bridge has been considered one of the most iconic landmarks of Prague and renowned pieces of medieval architecture for centuries.
