Meet Pak Wayan , The "Unknown" Balinese ICON , How A Tour Driver became an Art Collector of Indonesian Treasures

The first moment you meet Pak Wayan , you feel the passion , you want to hear his stories ! A simple Balinese man who traveled most of his life to secretive and hidden places in his country , so rich in culture and age-old traditions , to collect "Beauty", Indonesian Art since the 50's !

He started out as a tour guide & driver .....Made took me to his uncles home for the first time around 2004 . I was hooked ! I have so much respect and honor for the devotion , the faith he has for his Balinese Hindu religion , Gods & Goddesses , how men like him keep their culture alive.

"onARTBali" project was born many years later when the family was in financial troubles and a gallery had to be sold . I knew it was the right time to expose those hidden treasures to the whole world and help selling some of those , over 6000 pieces.

I created an amateur website by myself on weebly and went online with our first professional photographs. I also made various accounts on social media platforms and promote with one wish in mind, to find people who appreciate his collection as much as I do . Here you find some photos from our first auction . I did not sell much and at some point I was so frustrated and stopped everything , running out of cash. I had no other choice .

Then I heard about STEEMIT ! Thanks to @rok-sivante

This platform , a creative community is giving hope again , new energy and motivation . I am asking your kind feedback , especially support from art-lovers .

I am still trying to figure out what will be my next step how to finance and sponsor this project to help this man and his family . Maybe I am lucky to be able to publish a beautiful tablebook and produce a documentary.

SO for now that's what I gonna do :

I post an Interview , a few links and 2 pictures . I kept it unedited because the way of explaining his life , in his own words is more charming to understand who he is . Hope you enjoy ! It was not easy to get this done because he is a very shy and an introvert man .

He hopes that people like his collection just like in the old days ,when even famous people like Marlon Brando and Sylvester Stallone came to Bali and bought from him but those days are over as he says , in a sad voice .

Now he builds wood houses , antique Joglo's like the one in the picture

Thank you for your interest read that far  !
