🎵 Steemit Open Mic Songwriters Challenge Week 6 - “Rosebud” (Original Song)

"Rosebud" is an original song, prompted by this week's Steemit Open Mic Songwriters Challenge. Here, you can be the first to hear it.

“Rosebud”

The Story

The songwriting theme is "Special Delivery," and so my creative process started with the remembrance of a special delivery that changed my life five years ago: my daughter's birth. Her name is Rosalie. A song about a rose arrived, with Mother Mary appearing in the chorus. I wrote from the heart, allowing my mind to rest while the feelings came through in the guitar, and later I let the words flow. A story opened, and petals unfolded, and this song seemed to blossom in the way songs sometimes blossom.

In the song, a rose is given to an elderly woman, as a way of connecting with life before making her passage. It is as if the Mother Mary herself delivers this rose, although this is open to interpretation. Mary was a focal point for me throughout the holiday season. I felt connected with her in the Christmas Spirit, naturally, and again in the New Year festivities. Although there is so much more I'd like to share, I'll say about that much for now.

"Rosebud" is newly written for the Steemit Open Mic Songwriters Challenge, prompted by the theme: "Special Delivery."

The Lyrics

A sun arrives on a horizon
Colors come out of hiding on a mountain
An old woman who time forgot
Receives a rosebud growing in a flower pot

And by the grace of Mother Mary
A woman learns to cultivate a rose
Witnessing the way she holds the sunshine
Witnessing the way she bears the rain

A storm appears on a countryside
A widow mourns a passing life
A rosebush soaked in dew drops
Shows a first rose budding in a flower pot

And by the grace of Mother Mary...

A woman adores a rose
Growing more alive as a flower grows
Facing all the sun rays and rain storms
Embracing all the petals and the thorns

And by the grace of Mother Mary...

A sun sets on a horizon
Colors go into hiding on a mountain
An open rose begins to wither
Mother Mary brings the rosebud home with Her

The Acknowledgements

I'm grateful to @meno, @luzcypher for bringing us the #openmicsongwriters community challenge. I'll say once again that I am so grateful for the #openmic as a whole: the hosts, the audience, the songwriters... This event lights me up week after week. I am impressed and delighted to see the growth of these Open Mic events (200 entries last week!) as well as many levels of growth I see in certain participants, including myself.

Also, just this morning, I discovered an additional Steemit community challenge that is making my heart leap: #ophumanangels. Operation Human Angels, created by @lyndsaybowes, is strumming my heartstrings right alongside the #gratefulvibes challenge, by @paradise-found, and the #popcontest by @karenmckersie. To me, each of these community challenges is a call for us all to stand up for what we value in life, working to create the world we wish to live in, shining with all our unique brilliance and beauty.

Cheers and Happy New Year!
