I grew up on the 9th worst environmental disaster site in Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania has the 3rd largest number of sites in the country. This adds up to me and my family being pretty much screwed. Way to go, Dad, for picking out a house where the birds won't fly.
The pollution was so bad and required so much money to clean up that we qualified for federal funds and my neighborhood became a Superfund Site. I wrote a song about it which I hope you will enjoy.
*** In this context, PCP stays for Pentachlorophenol, a chlorinated hydrocarbon used in wood preservation that can be converted into dibenzodioxins (really bad) by UV light and minerals in the soil. PCP is great for its intended use, just don't dump 1 million gallons of it down an abandoned well ;)
Superfund Site lyrics
Way back in '79 my parents bought a new house
Bought it on the Mainline, and everything thing seemed all right
Then when the rain came down, something came up from the ground
Now I can't sleep at night
Cuz I live on a Superfund Site
I live on a Superfund Site
I saw the men in space suits fence off where we used to play
They put up big warning signs where we swam the prior day
They said the water we drank wasn't fit for man or beast
They coulda let us all know or sent a postcard at least
My brother looked up to me, said, "What is wrong?"
I said, "I got some bad news, we might not live very long."
I live on a Superfund Site
Talkin' to the EPA, didn't like what they had to say
It started in the '50s, still cleaning it up to this day
We got lots of PCP, but not the kind that you smoke
I wish it was the kind that you smoke
It'd probably be better for me
When I go out late at night
I don't need a flashlight
My skin's so shiny and bright
Cuz I live on a Superfund Site
I live on a Superfund Site
Didn't know what to do
Still don't know what to do,
Guess I'll just stay here
This ain't no Love Canal, ain't no Times Beach
This isn't far away, much more in my reach
I was thinking of joining Green Peace
And patrolling the seas
But they attack whaleboats in the sea
That sounds too scary to me
Guess I'll just stay at home, talk to friends on the phone
Tell them how much that it bites
Growing up on a Superfund Site
I live on a Superfund Site
I live on a Superfund Site
I live on a Superfund Site
