STEEMIT OPEN MIC WEEK 79 - ORIGINAL SONG "BROWN-EYED BOY"

OPENMIC79.jpg

This is another song off of my first album, "Plain Jane." Actually this song was first released as an solo recording very much like this one. I recorded it with Jerry Hager who still plays bass, engineers and sometimes co-produces many of my projects. This song was first captured on a 4-track cassette tape deck in a Nashville apartment Jerry and I shared back in the early 1990s. That track ended up as the A side of a blue vinyl 7 inch that was released through Aardvark Records. It was also one of the recordings that lead to my landing my first song publishing contract.

Lyrics:

She was talkin' while we were walkin'
and I could still smell her on my coat,
'cause she wore it last night when we had a fight
down by the docks where the big fishing boats
come in from the sea on waves of white,
and the sailors and the whores they stay up all night.
She said boy you know I'm seen your kind before
you're gonna break my heart and walk out my door.
And her voice was sad and her face was pale
behind her long red curls.
But I'm just another brown-eyed boy
in love with a blue-eyed girl.

I remember when I met her. How could I forget her
with her dancing feet dressed in workman's shoes.
At a party at your place she put on her best face
and laughed while she listened to the blues.
And when I asked to meet her, she smiled sweeter
than a bottle full of strawberry wine.
And when I asked did she think she needed a drink she said
no none for me this room's spinning just fine.
Then she turned away and began to sway
and dance and twist and twirl.
And I'm just another brown-eyed boy
in love with a blue-eyed girl.

Now I said baby I didn't mean maybe
when I said I loved you so.
But you must understand I'm only a man
I gave up on perfection such a long long time ago.
She turned her face. Then she turned her back.
Then she turned on her long high heels.
And I looked at her standing all alone in the night
and I wondered about just how it feels
to be a woman receiving beads and glass
when you were expecting pearls.
And I'm just another brown-eyed boy
in love with a blue-eyed girl.
