Where Did You Sleep Last Night?
Since I was a teenager I sang this song, when I was a faithful follower of Nirvana's legacy. The song, whose author is unknown, is from around 1870 and was transmitted from singer to singer over many years, however, the first recording appears in 1970. It is also known as In the pines and Black girl. This song is folk style and has been recorded by many artists in various musical styles. The tribute version of my recording is, as I said before, for the grunge band Nirvana. Without a doubt it is the best song to say goodbye in the album Unplugged in New York from 1993.
Where Did You Sleep Last Night?
My girl, my girl, don't lie to me;
Tell me where did you sleep last night.
In the pines, in the pines,
Where the sun don't ever shine,
I would shiver the whole night through.
My girl, my girl, where will you go?
I'm going where the cold wind blows.
In the pines, in the pines,
Where the sun don't ever shine,
I would shiver the whole night through.
Her husband was a hard working man,
Just about a mile from here.
His head was found in a driving wheel,
But his body never was found.
