College student volunteers at the homeless shelter.

At the family shelter my children are staying in, there is a series of doors to go through. First, the door to the building itself.

Immediately inside that door is a locked door you can only get through by a security person letting you in. Upstairs are thr low income apartments, on the main level, literally underground, is the shelter.

There is a second locked door to get through to enter the shelter, we are completely segregated from those upstairs. We are not allowed to visit them, go into their apartments, allow them into the shelter area etc.

Beyond that door it is a completely different experience. The nice carpeting becomes cheap laminate tile. The walls are covered in scuff marks, dirt and grime that just don't seem to exist on the walls directly outside that door.

The same woman cleans both sides.

Well, this young man from the University of MN, Duluth campus is named Brendan.

He is utilizing his weekend and his dollars (he paid for the paint and supplies himself!) to paint the entirity of the shelter's hallway and laundry room.

He is very friendly and says he just wanted to do something positive for the families staying in the shelter.

Thank you, Brendan, you are an amazing young man!!!
