If you are on a road trip in Utah (and you should definitely go there), let me say that there is no either-or-decision between Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park. They are both compulsory stops!
For a visit to Zion, you should take at least a full day. If you want to limit yourself to one hike, we recommend climbing Angels Landing.
The 1765 m high rock formation is not without reason the most popular mountain in the whole park. Just after 4.3 kilometers, but 450 meters in altitude, you can enjoy a sensational view.
Like Bryce Canyon, this national park can not be explored with the own car. From the visitor center, shuttle buses must be used to get to the various starting points. The cost of the buses are included in the entrance fee and so you can easily reach the stop "The Grotto".
Even if the hike does not sound very far, you should definitely bring enough water and sunscreen. People with knee problems should keep in mind that the trail is very steep, which can lead to problems on the way back. You should also not be afraid of heights ;)
The path to the summit snakes its way up the mountain in serpentines, revealing an even more beautiful view the higher you get. We were catching ourselves taking a new photo in every hairpin bend.
Many visitors only hike up to the Scout Overlook, a scenic plateau from which the peak can already be seen. For true adventurers, the fun starts here: The path becomes narrower and rockier while the abyss is coming closer and descend is getting deeper and deeper.
At some points you have to walk along iron chains or climb up smaller rock ledges.
Although it was a good feeling to arrive at the summit of Angels Landing, we were a little disappointed that the adventurous last section was already over.
The view is more than spectacular, even in all directions. It is impressive to see the river bend separating the huge rock walls and continuing its way out the valley.
So there was no doubt we added Angels Landing to the top 3 of our best hikes.

Wer während eines Roadtrips in Utah unterwegs ist (und das solltet ihr unbedingt), dem sei gesagt, dass es keine Entweder-Oder-Entscheidung zwischen dem Zion Nationalpark und dem Bryce Canyon Nationalpark gibt. Es sind definitiv beides Pflichtprogramme!
Für einen Besuch im Zion solltet ihr euch mindestens einen ganzen Tag Zeit nehmen. Wenn ihr euch dabei auf eine Wanderung beschränken wollt, empfehlen wir die Besteigung des Angels Landing.
Denn die 1765 m hohe Felsformation ist nicht ohne Grund der meistbestiegene Berg im ganzen Park. Bereits nach 4,3 Kilometer, dafür aber 450 Höhenmeter, kann man eine sensationelle Aussicht genießen.
Wie auch der Bryce Canyon kann dieser Nationalpark nicht mit dem eigenen Auto erkundet werden. Ab dem Visitor Center müssen Shuttle-Busse genutzt werden, um an die verschiedenen Ausgangspunkte zu gelangen. Die Kosten der Busse sind im Eintrittspreis bereits enthalten und so kommt ihr unkompliziert zur Haltestelle "The Grotto".
Auch wenn sich die Wanderung nicht weit anhört solltet ihr unbedingt genug Wasser und Sonnenschutz mitnehmen. Personen mit Knieproblemen sollten bedenken, dass der Weg sehr steil ist und dies gerade auf dem Rückweg zu Problemen führen kann. Etwas schwindelfrei solltet ihr zudem auch sein ;)
Der Weg zum Gipfel schlängelt sich in Serpentinen den Berg hoch und gibt in jeder weiteren Spitzkehre einen noch schöneren Blick auf das Tal frei, sodass man sich ständig dabei erwischt ein neues Foto zu machen.
Viele Besucher wandern nur bis zum Scout Overlook, einem Aussichtsplateau von dem aus die Spitze bereits zu erkennen ist. Für echte Abenteurer beginnt hier erst der Spaß: Der Weg wird schmaler und felsiger während der Abgrund näher rückt und immer tiefer hinabfällt.
An einigen Wegstellen muss man sich an Eisenketten entlang hangeln oder kleinere Felsvorsprünge hinaufklettern.
Auch wenn es natürlich ein gutes Gefühl war auf dem Gipfel von Angels Landing anzukommen, waren wir fast etwas enttäuscht, dass der abenteuerliche letzte Abschnitt schon zu Ende war.
Die Aussicht ist mehr als spektakulär und das sowohl in sämtliche Richtungen. Es ist beeindruckend zu sehen, wie die Flussschlinge die riesigen Felswände trennt und sich weiter das Tal hinaus schlängelt.
Völlig zurecht steht damit Angels Landing in den Top 3 unserer besten Wanderungen 😎
