This Is Japan

Explore everyday life in Japan

Driving in Japan involves mirrors. As buildings are built right up to the edge of the road and because roads' shoulders, where they do exist, are narrow, something is necessary to allow drivers to see around corners and look for oncoming traffic. That necessary something is mirrors, mirrors that are strategically placed and angled. You will find mirrors like these at many intersections.

For me, even after four years of driving in Japan and using these mirrors, I haven't gotten used to using them. Regardless of what I see in the mirrors, I always want to inch out into the road before me until I can see down it for myself and then make a decision about whether it is safe to go or not.
