Bow Before the 13 Buddhas! :: Beautiful Japan #60

Just standing around, trying to look cool.

The 13 Buddhas is a Japanese grouping of Buddhist deities. It is mainly used in Shingon Buddhism, which is a bit more spiritual than the rest, and in funerals.

They aren't all Buddhas. Also in the 13 are included bodhisattvas and wisdom kings. Think of the former as Buddhist saints, and the latter as scary figures who are suppose to shock nonbelievers into faith. Yeah, Shingon Buddhism is a bit strange.

Regardless of the superstition, they are cool looking statues, eh? I was lucky to come by here just as the sun was setting, giving the impressive backdrop.
