While the Inca trail still is the most famous way of hiking to Machu Picchu, the Salkantay trek has grown in popularity recently. When I hiked it in 2015 it was still possible to go without a permission, but the growing number of tourists has made the the local government change this. Nevertheless, this is one of the most spectacular trails in South America!
