Photos From The Briscoe Museum Of WESTERN ART ~ SAN ANTONIO

A recent trip to San Antonio brought us to the downtown Riverwalk. Located just off the Riverwalk are lots of shops, cafes and even a sizable museum. The Briscoe Museum of Western Art is located just off the Riverwalk and opens for free to the public on certain days of the week.

My family has been researching western art for the upcoming year for homeschool, so we decided this would be a great opportunity to check out this museum.

One of the main attractions that visitors first see is the fully restored Wells Fargo US Mail carriage. It is beautifully ornate and restored down to the last detail.

The Wells Fargo mail carriage is not the only large restoration that the museum has on display. The third floor of the museum shows off an amazing fully restored covered wagon from 19th century.

Artwork hangs in the gallery above the Well Fargo mail carriage. You can just see the top of the carriage in this photo.

A bronze statue of Col. William Travis who commanded the Alamo at the time of the siege from Mexico. Behind him is the flag that became a symbol of the Texas revolution. The Mexican forces were instructed to remove a cannon from Texan forces at the colony of Gonzales. The Texans refused to give up the canon and created a flag to taught their adversaries. This became the first violent skirmish in the war leading up to the battle of the Alamo.

A museum model recreated to give visitors a birds eye view of the final assault on the Alamo. This was the best overview model we saw on our trip. You will find many models like these all over the city and historical sites.

My family had a wonderful time at the museum and visiting all of the sites around the city. I would highly recommend a visit to the city. There were many children visiting the museum and with all its displays will surely keep their interest.

ENJOY THE PHOTOS!
