The Magic of Venice / Der Zauber von Venedig Pt. 1

I will never forget the first time I saw Venice. We arrived as many do -- day trippers. We parked on the mainland and took a water bus to Venice. Of course I had seen it in films, but nothing prepared me for the wonder of it as we made our way down a magnificent avenue of water. A centuries old city without cars and asphalt, more beautiful than I could have ever imagined it.

Ich werde nie vergessen, als ich Venedig das erste Mal sah. Wir kamen, wie viele Leute, als Tagesausflügler an. Wir parkten auf dem Festland und nahmen einen Wasserbus nach Venedig. Natürlich hatte ich es in Filmen gesehen, aber nichts bereitete mich auf das Wunder von der Stadt, als wir unseren Weg durch eine herrliche Wasserallee machten, vor. Eine Jahrhunderte alte Stadt ohne Autos und Asphalt, schöner als ich es mir jemals vorstellen konnte.

In our area in Bavaria there used to be a couple of bus companies which offered day trips to Venice. They left early in the morning and arrived in Venice in time for lunch, left in the late afternoon and got back in the evening. When some of my family from America came for a visit, we surprised them with a trip to Venice. The tour guide/drivers gave us a very good tip when we got to St. Mark's Square: get in line and go up the tower to get a commanding view of the city. I really didn't want to stand in line, but we did.

On that trip I only had a little instamatic film camera with me, but it will give you an idea of what to expect. It is fascinating because you suddenly realize this is not one island, but lots of them joined by bridges, with neighboring islands you can only reach by boat.

In unserem Gebiet in Bayern gab es ein paar Busunternehmen, die Tagesausflüge nach Venedig boten. Sie verließen früh am Morgen und kamen in Venedig rechtzeitig zum Mittagessen an, die Abfahrt war am späten Nachmittag und man kam wieder abends (recht müde) an. Als einige meiner Familie aus Amerika zu Besuch kamen, überraschten wir sie mit einer Reise nach Venedig. Am St. Markus Platz gab uns unser Fahrer einen sehr guten Tipp: "Steigen Sie auf den Turm, um einen herrlichen Blick auf die Stadt zu bekommen." Ich wollte wirklich nicht in der Schlange stehen, aber wir haben es getan. Ich hatte nur eine kleine Instamatic-Filmkamera mit mir, aber es wird dir eine Vorstellung davon geben, was zu erwarten ist. Es ist faszinierend, weil man plötzlich merkt, das ist nicht eine Insel, sondern besteht aus vielen Inseln die mit Brücken verbunden sind, sowie benachbarten Inseln, die man nur mit dem Boot erreichen kann.

Many of the people you'll see there are first time visitors, and it is wonderful to observe their utter joy and happiness in this magical place.

Viele der Leute, die du dort sehen wirst, sind zum ersten Mal da. Es ist wirklich schön ihre Freude an diesem zauberhaften Ort zu beobachten.

Once we happened to be there when a very interesting musical group called the Wurzelkappele (roots band) from Southern Tirol in Italy were visiting. Their history dates back to 1750 & you can visit their Facebook page here to learn more. Many Americans are surprised that there is a German speaking region in Italy that borders Austria.

Zufällig waren wir dort als eine sehr interessante musikalische Gruppe namens Wurzelkappele aus Südtirol da waren. Ihre Geschichte geht bis 1750 zurück. Man kann ihre Facebook-Seite hier besuchen, um mehr zu erfahren.
