Today, I want to share another one of my bucket list images with you, a Grand Canyon sunset.
Driving through Arizona, we only had one opportunity to photograph the Grand Canyon. There are so many spots and vistas at the Grand Canyon. After doing some research we learned that this spot is not one of the most popular and was reviewed as a location that had less crowds. Having the watchtower in the foreground with the Grand Canyon and Colorado River in the background made for one great composition, definitely bucket list qualified.
Here is a map of Desert View Drive. I put a small red X to mark the spot where I setup.
As I setup my wife and kids explored the tower. Here are some images inside.
My recommendation is to get there at least three hours ahead of time if you want to catch a sunset. I say get there early because the roads in and out of the Grand Canyon are single lanes and can be full of traffic. We bought some sandwiches and had a picnic dinner with a view.
This was Kuma's second trip to the Grand Canyon. Dude is a world traveler.
We brought our jackets but should have brought some blankets. We didn't realize how cold up it gets up there at night. Hey, we're from San Diego.
I was happy to get two different looks from the same spot. Sunset shot was taken first.
After the sun went down, I just turned my camera to the right, recomposed for the watchtower, and waited ten minutes for the magic twilight hour. The sky opened up and the clouds turned colors as my girls described as, "Like cotton candy".
I hope you enjoy reading about our adventures.
