Punting on the Cam River has been a form of escape for the students of Cambridge University for much of its history. It's a great recreation to relieve the pressures of studying at one of the top universities in the world. For the tourists visiting Cambridge, punting is simply a must do activity. Punting on the Cam River is an unconventional yet fun and relaxing way of sightseeing Cambridge and it's infamous colleges, all the while having loads of fun.
In an article published by the BBC, Punting was put very high up at 3rd place for must visit and must do's. It's unique aesthetic and eclectic historical setting means punting at Cambridge River is something hard to find a replacement for anywhere else.

Punting on the River Cam
Punting on the river Cam to sight see came into vogue in 1702. Punting differs from other boating activities as it requires no oar or paddle. The boat is literally punted along the river by the punter who uses a very long pole to both steer and move the boat forwards by means of prodding the river bed with the pole and then angling the pole left and right to steer. This method of propelling a boat could only be possible on a shallow river such as River Cam.
The two different routes
When punting in Cambridge, you have have the choice between two routes. The Cambridge backs or the Grantchester route. Often, the people you rent the boat from will ask you colloquially "Granta or Colleges?" and this is simply just referring to the backs route, or Grantchester route. The Grantchester route has more natural scenery and you can often see Cows grazing along the river banks.
Downstream along the backs, the river is wider and the water is more level. You'll often see students sitting by the river drinking alcohol or coffee, waving hello to Punters as they pass by.
Along the river backs, you'll be able to see 7 of the most famous colleges and their gorgeous architecture. You'll also pass 6 world famous bridges.
Perhaps the most famous bridge is the Mathematical bridge. In story legends, the Bridge was designed by Isaac Newton to stand completely self supported without nuts and bolts. Students of his were tasked of taking it apart and putting it back together again. They could not work out how and so resulted in using nuts and bolts.
St. John's Bridge of Sighs. Pre-exam students are required to cross the bridge to arrive at the exam hall. Their journey along the bridge is often accompanied with sighs.
The grand and magnificent Kings College Chapel. Kings College is perhaps the most well known college in Cambridge, due to its extremely recognisable English Gothic architecture. It was established in 1441 by Henry VI.
My first time punting
The first time I held the pole, I lost my balance and almost fell in the river! Nowadays, you can choose between the wooden poles and the lighter stainless steel poles. I opted for the steel one which although is much lighter, is still really heavy for me. It's definitely alot harder than it looks, and aside from needing to be fit, you also need to have some skill too.
In the picture, behind me is Trinity College's, Trinity College Bridge.

I try my best to punt like the professionals, my stance wide and steady, I raise the pole up high, then let it drop by its own weight as I guide the pole to the riverbed. Then, I give it a good push hopefully in the right direction and off it goes! It's quite easy to pick up after some good trial and error, and after a few more tries, I was competent, even the cute little ducks swimming along the river would quack in acclamation.
The river atmosphere is very positive, even as boats bump into each other, the passengers cheer at each other instead of trying to pass blame. Many people even hope that they get to see someone falling into the river - it's actually quite common.
Cardboard boat championships
Believe it or not, Cambridge has also given birth to a unique event called suicide Sunday where people race in boats they made themselves from cardboard. As you can imagine, thing's don't end up very well for the boat's passengers. Check out some of the battle scenes below!
